What Metallic Epoxy Floors Are
Metallic epoxy floors use a clear epoxy mixed with fine metallic or pearl pigments. The resin is poured, spread and worked with rollers, brushes and sometimes solvent sprays to move the pigment into swirls, veins and waves. No two floors look the same. In Victorville we install metallic floors in show garages, converted game rooms, home gyms, offices and retail spaces where the floor is part of the design.
Cost
One of the most common questions on Google is how much a metallic epoxy floor costs. This Old House lists metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot installed. That is higher than many flake floors because the pattern is done by hand, the resin goes down thicker, and the slab has to be smoother. Multi-color designs and large rooms add time.
Prep matters more on a metallic floor
A flake floor hides small dips and patched cracks. A metallic floor shows them. The pigment settles into low spots and flows around high spots, so every flaw in the slab can show in the finish. We grind the slab flat, fill cracks and joints, and often apply a primer and a skim coat before the metallic layer. If a crack is likely to keep moving, we tell you, because it may telegraph through the finish later.
Heat and pour timing
Metallic epoxy has a limited working window, and heat shortens it. HomeGuide advises applying epoxy between 60 and 85 degrees. On a Victorville summer day a garage can be past that by late morning, so metallic pours start early, with the room closed and the slab temperature checked. Wind is the other concern. Dust that lands on a wet metallic coat shows clearly in the gloss, so we pick calm days and keep doors closed.
Sun and topcoats
Epoxy is not UV stable. HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as poor to fair. A metallic floor in a room with big windows or a garage with the door up can yellow over time, which muddies the colors. We seal metallic floors that see daylight with a clear UV-stable topcoat. Interior rooms with little direct sun can use an epoxy or urethane top.
Design options
- Single-color metallic: one pigment with highlights, often silver, charcoal, copper or pearl.
- Multi-color blends: two or three colors worked together for a marbled look.
- Lava or vein effects: solvent-sprayed cells and lines for a more dramatic pattern.
- Logos and borders: for dealerships and storefronts, laid out before the pour.
Living with a metallic floor
Metallic floors are glossy and can be slick when wet. We can add a fine anti-slip additive to the topcoat, which lowers the shine slightly. Use felt pads under furniture, sweep often to keep desert grit from scratching the gloss, and mop with plain water or a mild cleaner.
What This Covers
A metallic floor job covers flattening the slab, the design pour and a protective topcoat.
Grinding and flattening
The slab is ground smooth and low spots filled so the finish flows evenly.
Primer and base
A primer and tinted base coat seal the slab and set the background color.
Metallic pour
Pigmented epoxy poured and worked into the pattern you choose.
Clear topcoat
A UV-stable or interior topcoat to protect the finish, with optional anti-slip.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
This Old House lists about $5 to $12 per square foot installed. Large rooms, multiple colors and heavy slab repair push the price up.
Can metallic epoxy go in a garage?
Yes, and show garages are a popular use. Metallic floors are smoother and glossier than flake floors, so they show dust and tire marks more, and they need a UV-stable topcoat if the door stays open.
Will cracks show through a metallic floor?
They can. We fill and grind cracks first, but a crack that keeps moving may show again later. We point those out at the estimate.
Is metallic epoxy slippery?
The glossy finish can be slick when wet. A fine anti-slip additive in the topcoat helps, with a small drop in shine.
