Garage Floors for Snow Country
Wrightwood gets real winters. The town sits at 6,208 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains, and Wikipedia's 1991 to 2020 climate figures show about 61.8 inches of snow a year, with February alone averaging 24.8 inches. Epoxy flooring in Wrightwood is about handling that water. Every storm brings snow, slush and mud into the garage on tires and boots, and bare concrete soaks it up.
Meltwater and grip
When a car pulls in after a storm, snow drops off the wheel wells and melts into puddles. On bare concrete that water soaks in, then freezes and thaws again overnight. January lows here average 25.6 degrees, so that cycle repeats all winter. A sealed floor keeps the water on the surface, where a squeegee can push it out the door.
A wet floor also has to be safe to walk on. Here is how we set up a Wrightwood garage:
- A full flake broadcast for texture across the whole floor
- A fine anti-slip aggregate in the topcoat at walkways and the house door
- Coated stem walls so meltwater does not stain the base of the walls
- A clear check of where water flows so it heads toward the door
Old cabins, old slabs
Wikipedia notes that downtown Wrightwood is dotted with old resort cabins from the 1930s. The community took shape by the 1920s when Sumner Wright's ranch was divided into lots, and it kept growing for decades, from 2,511 residents in 1980 to 4,720 in 2020. That gives Wrightwood a wide range of concrete. Older garage and cabin slabs may be uneven, patched or worn through on top. Newer ones may have a sealer that has to come off. Every floor gets diamond ground, and we tell you up front if a slab needs repair before it can be coated.
Install season in the mountains
A coating needs a warm enough slab to cure. Wrightwood's July highs average about 83 degrees, while January highs average under 48. Late spring through early fall is the easiest window for an unheated garage. In colder months we check slab temperature and may use products rated for lower temperatures, or schedule around a warm stretch. We will not pour on a slab that is too cold.
Wildfire season and outdoor slabs
Wrightwood has been under evacuation orders or warnings for the Blue Cut Fire in 2016, the Bobcat Fire in 2020 and the Bridge Fire in 2024, when the entire town was evacuated. Smoke and ash settle on everything after a fire, including patios and garage floors. A sealed concrete surface cleans up far more easily than bare slab, which can hold soot stains in its pores. If you are planning a patio coating, we can work with your timeline before or after fire season.

What to Know in Wrightwood
- Heavy mountain snow. Wrightwood averages 61.8 inches of snow a year under 1991 to 2020 normals, with 24.8 inches in February and about 17.8 snowy days a year.
- Freezing winter nights. The mean January low is 25.6 degrees and the record low is minus 2, so garage slabs freeze and thaw many times each winter.
- 1930s resort cabins. Downtown Wrightwood is dotted with old resort cabins from the 1930s, and a community had formed on Sumner Wright's subdivided ranch by the 1920s.
- Many part-time homes. Of 2,664 housing units in 2020, 74.5% were occupied and 25.5% were vacant, a much higher vacancy share than nearby desert towns.
- Fire evacuations. The Blue Cut Fire in 2016 and Bobcat Fire in 2020 brought evacuations or warnings, and the 2024 Bridge Fire led to evacuation of the entire town.

Wrightwood Questions
Will an epoxy floor be slippery with snow on it?
Any floor is slicker when wet. We reduce that with a full flake broadcast and an anti-slip aggregate in the topcoat, especially at the house door and walkways. Squeegee out standing meltwater after storms.
Can you coat a garage in winter in Wrightwood?
Sometimes. It depends on the slab temperature and the forecast. We test the slab, use cold-rated products when they fit, and reschedule if conditions are not safe for a proper cure.
I only use my Wrightwood place part-time. Can you still do the job?
Yes. We can plan the estimate for when you are up, then schedule the install with access arranged ahead of time and send you photos when it is finished.
